Human Muscles:

The half of the weight of the person’s body depends on the muscles which are attached to the bones in a skeletal system. Muscular system which comprises of 700 different muscles is divided into 3 different groups i.e. Cardiac Muscles, Skeletal Muscles and Smooth / Visceral Muscles. The muscles are made up of blood vessels, nerves, muscle tissue and tendons which help in movement of various substances in the organs throughout a body.

About Cardiac Muscle:

This muscle controls the blood flow throughout the body as it’s the only muscle which is found in the heart and helps pumping the blood all the time.

About Skeletal Muscles:

The movement of the body such as walking, speaking, running etc. is governed by this muscle as it is attached to the bones. These are strong and flexible enough, that they are resistant to breakage and tears. Overextension of these can result into injury and strains.

About Smooth / Visceral Muscles:

These are the muscles which surround stomach, intestines, blood vessels and lungs. They fall into the category of ‘Involuntary Muscles’ as the body cannot control them and they are controlled by the Brain’s unconscious part. They are called smooth as they appear to be uniform & smooth, when seen through microscope.

The leg comprises of the longest muscles in the body which is Sartorius Muscle and the largest muscle is called Gluteus Muscle, which is used while sitting.

Functions of Muscular System:

Movement which is the primary function of the muscular system is governed by the contraction of the muscles. Other function of the muscles is: – maintaining the body’s posture and position – which can hold the body for an entire day without any tiredness, transportation of food and blood in whole body with the help of cardiac and smooth muscles, body heat generation to regulate the metabolism, controlling the passages & opening of the body parts and controlling of blood sugar in the body by absorbing large portion of blood glucose.

Diseases with Muscular System:

There are many diseases related to muscular system. Muscular dystrophy damages the fibers if muscles. It leads to abnormalities like swallow, breath and speak. Cerebral palsy is related to motor and balance functions of the body. Fibromyalgia causes the muscular pain, fatigue and stiffness in muscles. With proper care of muscular system, the diseases can be avoided.  Following the proper exercise routine and healthy diet can help in strengthening the muscles. Along with these correct posture must be followed.
